Solar heat

Solar heat reduction

Reduce solar heat through exposed windows in dining areas, showrooms, offices, industrial staff spaces and multifamily amenity rooms. Film selection depends on glazing type, sun exposure and the amount of visible light you want to retain.

Glare

Glare reduction

Reduce glare on computer screens and in customer seating areas. Clear-view film retains more daylight; darker films generally provide greater glare reduction.

UV exposure

UV exposure and fading

Reduce UV exposure to merchandise, vehicle interiors, furnishings and finishes. UV is one cause of fading; visible light, heat and material sensitivity also contribute.

We recommend a film based on heat rejection, glare reduction, visible light transmission and glass compatibility. Review physical samples before approving the finish.

High visible light transmission

XPEL Clear View Plus and Clear View Ceramic include light-transmitting solar films for projects where outward visibility and daylight are priorities. Performance varies by product and shade.

Neutral & tinted film

Reduced visible light transmission

Darker films reduce more visible light and can provide greater glare reduction. They also change the appearance of the glass; we review samples against your lighting and finish requirements.

Reflective solar film

Reflective exterior appearance

Reflective films offer solar control with a more reflective exterior finish. Product selection must account for glass compatibility and any landlord or building appearance restrictions.

For visual privacy, see privacy and frosted film. Reflective solar film is not reliable night-time privacy when the inside of the building is brighter.

Product selection

Choosing solar film for your commercial property

Start with the problem you need to solve, then compare the measured performance and appearance of suitable films. Different elevations or rooms may need different specifications.

Retail displays and vehicle showrooms

Where an outward view and visible displays are priorities, begin with high visible light transmission. Compare Clear View Plus 70 with a sample on the proposed glazing, including the view from outside.

Office screens and workstations

Record which screens are affected and when glare occurs. Compare glare reduction across shades; a darker film may improve screen visibility but will admit less daylight throughout the day.

Sun-exposed offices and dining areas

Compare total solar energy rejection alongside light transmission. Include window orientation, hours of direct sun and occupied areas in the assessment. Film addresses solar heat through glass; it does not resolve every cause of overheating.

Merchandise, vehicles and interior finishes

Check UV rejection, then assess visible light and heat exposure as well. All six solar films compared here list 99% UV rejection, but that does not make them equal in glare control or prevent all fading.

Clear View Plus 70 transmits 72% of visible light and lists 20% glare reduction. Plus 40 transmits 40% and lists 53% glare reduction. These nominal 3 mm glass figures illustrate the daylight-versus-glare trade-off, not a recommendation for every building.

Understanding the specification

What the solar-film measurements mean

Visible light transmission (VLT)
The percentage of visible light passing through the film-and-glass combination. Higher values retain more daylight. VLT does not measure UV protection or guarantee visual privacy.
Total solar energy rejection (TSER)
The percentage of total solar energy rejected in the manufacturer’s test configuration. Use it to compare solar performance on the same glass basis; it is not a percentage reduction in your utility bill.
Glare reduction
The manufacturer’s reported reduction in visible glare. Compare this separately from TSER, particularly where computer screens or sun-facing seating are the main concern.
Exterior reflectivity
The percentage of visible light reflected outward in the test configuration. A higher value indicates a more reflective appearance. Check samples and building appearance requirements.
UV rejection
The percentage of ultraviolet radiation rejected in the test configuration. UV contributes to fading, but visible light, heat and the sensitivity of the exposed material also matter.
Infrared rejection
A measurement of the infrared portion of the spectrum. It is different from total solar energy rejection. A high infrared figure should not be presented as the percentage of all solar heat rejected.

Glass compatibility, installation scope and warranty

Glass and installation checks

We identify the glass type, existing coatings, pane dimensions and condition before selecting film. Low-E, laminated and insulating glass require a product-specific compatibility check.

We also review sun exposure, shading, existing film, installation access and any partial-coverage proposal against XPEL’s requirements. Film is not a repair for damaged glass or failed seals.

What the quotation should identify

The film name and product code, finish, glazing areas, coverage layout, preparation or removal work, access requirements and installation phases. Provide your required completion date and any landlord or construction restrictions.

We confirm product availability, estimated installation duration, care instructions and applicable warranty terms before the work is booked.

Commercial warranty for the Clear View products listed here

XPEL lists a 15-year limited commercial film warranty for Clear View Plus, Clear View Ceramic and Clear View Alloy. Coverage is subject to the selected product, eligible glazing, installation requirements and the manufacturer’s terms.

Film-defect coverage and any glass-breakage or seal-failure coverage have different conditions and periods. Do not assume that an existing window warranty automatically covers film installation.

We discuss your requirements by phone before arranging a site assessment. For larger projects, we confirm the scope across rooms, floors or multiple locations.

    Review the areas requiring film, glass type and condition, sun exposure, privacy requirements and access. Measure the glazing and check film compatibility.

    Confirm the product and scope

    Review film samples and specifications. The quote identifies the selected film, coverage, installation scope and applicable warranty, with proposed timing.

  3. 03 / Installation

    Prepare and apply the film

    Prepare the glass, apply the specified film and inspect the installation. Provide cleaning, curing and care instructions, along with the applicable product documentation.

Q.01What is the difference between Clear View Plus 70 and Plus 40?
In XPEL’s nominal 3 mm glass data, Plus 70 transmits 72% of visible light with 55% TSER and 20% glare reduction. Plus 40 transmits 40%, with 62% TSER and 53% glare reduction. Compare daylight and glare needs before selecting.
Q.02Will solar film make the windows darker?
The effect depends on the film’s visible light transmission. Lighter Clear View products retain more daylight; darker shades reduce more visible light. We review samples before you approve a finish.
Q.03How much glare does clear-view film reduce?
XPEL lists 20% glare reduction for Clear View Plus 70, compared with 53% for Clear View Plus 40, on 3 mm glass. A lighter film may not provide enough glare control for every workstation.
Q.04Does total solar energy rejection equal energy-bill savings?
No. TSER describes solar energy rejected by the film-and-glass combination. Building energy use also depends on glazing area, orientation, insulation, HVAC operation and heating needs.
Q.05Does solar film prevent fading?
Solar film reduces UV exposure, one contributor to fading. Visible light, heat and material sensitivity also matter. Film cannot prevent all fading.
Q.06Can film be installed on existing glazing?
Suitability depends on glass type, coatings, condition, size and exposure. We check the proposed film against XPEL’s film-to-glass requirements before specifying it.
Q.07Does reflective film provide privacy at night?
Reflective screening depends on relative light levels. When the interior is brighter, people outside may see in. Use a frosted finish or a separate covering where dependable privacy is required.
Q.08How soon can installation start, and how long will it take?
Timing depends on film availability, glazing area, access and building restrictions. Include your required completion date in the enquiry. We confirm the start date, estimated duration and any installation phases before booking.
